Blueberries are a seasonal fruit that are typically better tasting and less expensive when bought and enjoyed in season. The high season for blueberries is late May through October.
The Good News
If you want to enjoy blueberries and their health benefits year round without paying the high price for imported berries, you can freeze your fresh blueberries and thaw or use them frozen throughout the year. The freezing process is simple and easy.
Step 1: Wash Your Blueberries
Fill up a large container with clean, cold water.
Place the berries in a colander and dip them in the water. Gently swish the colander in the water. Then drain the berries.
Note: You do not want to rinse blueberries under running water because the pressure can tear the skin and/or crush them.
Step 2: Dry Blueberries
After rinsing thoroughly, spread the blueberries in a single layer on a cookie sheet or baking tray lined with paper towels.
Pat the berries dry with another paper towel.
Inspect and remove blueberries for tags and mealy or moldy berries.
Step 3: Freeze Blueberries
Arrange the whole berries on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Note: Freezing in this way, keeps the blueberries loose and makes measuring and thawing easier.
Step 4: Bagging Your Blueberries
Date and bag your blueberries in a zip lock baggie and store in your freezer.
Step 5: Enjoy Your Blueberries
When ready to enjoy your blueberries, thaw or use frozen in your breakfast meals, snacks, appetizers, sauces and as main dish accents and enhancements.
